How to stop Tail Biting?

So, Unfortunately, My first betta, Charlie died on new years day... RIP

I got a new one a week ago, It a red, veil tail. along with 2 small danieos?


Can The danioes nip at his tail? i need ways to stop this ( tail biting). i recognize the symptoms

How has your betta fish's appearance changed? ripped and jagged tail

It is possible for the Danios to nip at his tail. In my opinion and most of the other members on this forum will probably agree that, in a 5 gallon tank, it is not advisable to have any other fish with your betta. Most people only have fish as other tank mates when it is 10 gallons or larger.

For recovery I suggest possibly separating your betta and treating him with clean water and some stresscoat+, maybe a day in some salt just to make sure it doesn't develop into finrot.

As for permanent precautions against your danios nipping, I suggest you consult somebody in the Compatability section! :)

I agree...IMO 5gal is not enough space to meet the needs of other species of fish along with the Betta-not to mention the limited dissolved oxygen without a filter...especially Dianos....this species really need 20gal to meet swimming needs alone-as well as a lot more of them the meet social needs...Danios are really neat species and a lot of fun to watch zipping around the tank non-stop......another issue you can sometimes have even with the correct size tank and number of Danios along with the Betta...is feeding issue....they are really fast and eat even faster... and often the Betta will not get enough to eat unless you cup and feed separate.....

As for the current fin issues with the Betta as Bahamut posted....fresh like temp dechlorinated water from frequent water changes is a good first step in treatment and good nutrition.....
