Adding a new filter

Hey guys, I have a betta that is been doing great in a 3 gallon tank for a couple weeks. I was wondering if there were any problems with adding a new filter to a tank that could disrupt the fish, the tank cycle or anything really. I know filters need time before they start to work and don't want to hurt the fish with a new filter. Does anyone know if this is safe or should I just avoid the filter and change the water more often?

What kind of filter is it? Does it have a strong current? Filtration helps remove detritus so its a plus! I've never had issues adding a filter.
