My Very First Betta!

(Also my very first post )

I picked this guy up from Petco yesterday. I hope I'll be a good betta 'mommy'. He seems to have a bit of a strange coloring and, being a novice, I'm a bit worried that I've missed signs of illness. Does he look healthy to you guys?

He is swimming okay but he spends most of his time in the corner of the tank and hasn't started eating yet. I hope this is just because of the stress involved in moving to a new home but I wanted to check, just in case.

What beautiful coloring! That's one reason I love the bettas, because they are some of the most colorful fresh water fish out there!

Help?

Sorry about this, but I have no idea how to start a thread and I just thought this could be seen by somebody who could help me here. I just bought a betta at Walmart. It was labeled female, but I was wondering if it really is a female or not.

Thank you all for the compliments on my baby boy! I've decided to name him Jude. He's finally started eating and has been much more active so I think it's safe to give him a clean bill of health. =)

Weeknd,

To my inexperienced eye that looks like a plakat. I can't tell from the picture but I found the following information which might be helpful to you:

Quote:
Size:Females 1.5 inches (4 cm.) max normally although specimens that are well cared for or old can be bigger. Males 3 inches (8 cm.) max

[Plakat] are mistaken as females at many pet stores (especially Wal-mart). To tell the difference between a common female found at a pet store and a male Plakat is that the male will be bigger and thicker. Also when placed near another male, he will flare and display. Female Betta can flare but not as “wide” as the male can. He will also have a gill beard that drops down below his chin. Females do not have this.

He has great dragon and or cambodian coloring! Gorgeous! Surprised you found that little gem in PetCo. Or is your PetCo one of the ones that cares for their fish? Mine doesn't. :(
