Fin rot problems

this thread contains many shots of just some of the damage tail biters can do. I've seen or heard of them damaging everything but their pectoral fins from biting.

so if he's a biter....am I wasting my time having him in the hospital tank with aq salt? Should I just return him to his 3 gallon?

not necessarily, I put my boy on salt for a week after he bit simply because I was worried about rot setting in. It took him a long time to heal after his last bout, so I wanted to give him a bit of an edge, so to speak. Usually clean water is good enough, you just have to use your best judgement.

So Phoenix was in hospital tank for 6 days with AQ salt and was seeming pretty bored, doing some repetitive behaviors and alot of circling so I put him back in his big tank. I am giving him frozen brine shrimp for his evening meal and his 2 pellets in the morning. He unfortunately did a bit of damage while in the hospital tank. Which you can see in the following pictures. (excuse the dirt on my camera lens which is really visible with the flash on)

He seems to be happy in his big tank, he sits in the door of his castle when I'm not near the tank and likes to swim between his java ferns and around the moss ball which I just got him. I have also moved his plants around. Is there anything else I can be doing to help him?

He seems to be a night biter for sure. I definitely do not notice any damage during the day, even if I leave and come back....but I do frequently find damage in the morning. I have cats, but one sleeps on my bed and the other in my office. I'm pretty sure they are not bothering him at night more than during the day. In fact only one seems to even moderately care about him at all and only in passing.

I guess I would feel better if people could tell me how they deal with their biters....should I post a new thread to ask for that?
