Tap water has Nitrates!! Now what?

Hello all!
A month or so ago I got a betta a 1.5 gallon tank, filter and heater. I've recently been testing the water and have been coming up with around 10ppm of nitrates all the time. Today and yesterday I tested the tap water that I am using to fill the tank with and it is also coming up positive for nitrates at the same value of 10ppm!!!! Should I do anything or should the fishy be fine?? Thanks!

What kind of testing products are you using, tank size, filter, live plants, additives used, what are the other numbers on the source water-ammonia, nitrite, the tank cycled...what is the source water supply tap, well water...etc....when you tested the source water was it without any additives you normally add to the water for the Betta.....any behavior changes with the Betta....

Generally 10ppm nitrate should not cause any issues-you want to keep nitrate under 20ppm-water changes is one way to control it-but when your source water had nitrate to start that can be hard-at least 10ppm is a safe level....adding live plants can also help...

If you are on city water supply-I would go to their web-site and see if nitrate at that level is acceptable in your area....
