Another question about water changes (2.5 gallon)

I have my betta (Charlie) in a 2.5 Mini Bow with a filter and heater. I had to change the water the day right after I brought him home because of a leak in a old tank. I also bought a gravel vac. Before Charlie, I used to do 100% water changes every month (bad, I know!). Now I realize that I should be doing water changes more often. Question is, how often and how much? do I ever need to do anymore 100% water changes? I want to minimize his stress as much as possible.

1x 50% and 1x 100% should be fine per week.

I would say two 50%, you don't need your tank super clean. Some people have told me that a 50% and 100% is too clean. As long as your tank has it's filter running it will be fine. If not then a 50% and a 100%. The filter houses a bunch of good bacteria that will help reduce the ammonia and nitrites into nitrate.

Ammonia is toxic to your fish, nitrite is also toxic, but can be tolerated at higher levels than ammonia. Nitrate is toxic as well, but is less toxic to your fish than nitrite, so it can be handled at higher amounts.

50% twice a week. If possible, get the liquid test kit instead of the strips. It is more accurate and cheaper in the long run.

OK, I did my first 50% today. He seemed to have tolerated it pretty well. And it only took less than 10 minutes minus the set-up. Not that bad!

I would recommend 1 50% and 1 100% a week.
