Look at this PetCo rip off!

They are trying to sell this mystical "elephant ear betta" for $50 or $40 with discount! They really are just making stuff up aren't they?

That's about the same price you could pay for a pretty nice betta with a good genetic heritage on AB, big ears and all. Why would you pay that much in a petshop?
Also, 1 litre as the tank size? :(

Elephant ear bettas exist on Aquabid. Petco has probably found a local dealer in which they either import or breed big ear bettas.

Unless they are truly not big eared then this isn't exactly a hoax or a made up thing, they exist and go for much more on AB

I would be very interested to see if any of these show up in stores. If so, I can bet the outcome won't be good. At that price, the poor things will just sit there and rot in their little cups because no one wants to pay that much money. My Petco stopped selling kings for that very reason, no one wanted to pay that much money when they could get a VT for $3.99.

True. Makes me want to rescue the poor little guys. But I'm going to try PetsMart because my only betta that's still alive is Shimmer, and she's the only one I've got from PetsMart.

It's the same reason their ball pythons are 90 dollars when they should be 10--No one sees them around or knows how much they should cost at a breeder. To be honest, USUALLY petcos and petsmarts cost 5 times more than what a breeder costs because they have to jack up the price in order to afford to pay for store upkeep(air conditioning gets expensive) and people won't buy expensive supplies. So I'm really not surprised. And big ear bettas were about that much not too long ago really!
