Male or Female???

Hi everyone....

How do you tell if bettas are male or female???

Males generally have longer fuller fins (even in the plakat variety) the females. Also, you ca sometimes find a small white dot near a female's anal fin called the ovipositer, although I have heard that this is not always the best indication of gender. If your fish flares, a male will have a very full "beard" while females generally do not. Hope that helped!!

My fool-proof way is to check the length of the ventrals. Short and stout, its female, long and it's male :)

Unless it's a juvenile, of course. On juvies, it can be really hard to tell. By 3+ months, though, it should become more obvious. :) Males and females also have different shaped anal fins. I *think* females have more pointed anal fins, whereas males are more squared off (for plakat males) but I can't remember for sure.
