If you can, I would strongly advise rehoming your cat, or buying a ten gallon. Two catfish would definitely overcrowd the tank, and even two is not enough for a content school - 4 is really the minimum. Your catfish will be much happier if you can give him to someone who already has a larger tank with a school. :)

Is it still okay to do a 50% and a 100% water change once a week until I can get that liquid test kit? Or should I do it more than that?

It takes about a month until it's fully done from start to finish.

Never do 100% until it's cycled, until it is DO NOT vacuum the gravel, just siphon out the water you'll want to do 50-60% every 2-4 days to be safe until you can test.

mine's a 50 watt and 76 is as high as it will get here, it's a cold room! However in the summer this is the warmest room. My next heater will be fully adjustable.

Or maybe it's the thermometer? I have one of those stick on the glass types. Are they known to be reliable?

Mine's a stick on too from Walmart. If it is reliable the temp stays in this green area thats on the thermometer. Arthur doesn't seem to be sluggish or inactive though so I think mine's okay.

Those thermometers are as accurate as someone saying their fish talked to them lol. I would get one that goes in the tank. This is only $2, I have three and all are accurate http://www.amazon.com/Marina-Floatin...7633050&sr=8-1

I will jman thanks. Everyone's been so helpful.

Mine does go in the tank. I meant stick on in that it has a suction cup and I have the whole thermometer submerged on the inside of the tank.
