Okay I just got more girls for my sorority. I have already created one for one of the girls but now I just noticed one has a missing gill flap. She is acting fine and swimming in the cup. She has a lot of energy. I just want to know if it will heal and what I need to help it heal.
I will post a pic when my sister gets off. I got her from the store like this. It is part of the Gill on her left side. She even ate today and she got home a couple hours ago. Oh just something cool, my sister picked one out yesterday, and I went back today and found her sister! So the one with the missing gill flap has a sister!
Missing an entire gill flap? You mean you can see her gill? It's exposed? Yup, definitely going to need a pic for this one. How is she acting otherwise? She's eating okay but is she swimming and breathing okay?
It is part of the gill flap on the left side. She is happy and swimming in the container. Breathing is fine. The same person that has the pond actually got koi that is missing part of their gill flap as well. Hers have been alive for a while but it could shorten their life span maybe, I will post a picture as soon as I can get on the computer.
It does happen. An injury, a bacterial infection, parasites. They can all cause part of the gill flap to rot away. You might want to get your girl into 1 tsp of aquarium salt per gallon and find a product at Petco called Kordon Fish Protector. This will help her produce extra slime coat that will cover her gills and help heal the tissue underneath so it doesn't get infected.
