Flaring question

So it seems when I turn the light on Arthur goes straight to either side of the tank and starts flaring at himself or swimming back and forth. I tried the suggestion of putting a bottle cap in but so far he hasn't touched it. Should I go so far as to cover the three sides of the tank to eliminate any reflection or wait and see what happens?

I was just coming here to post a very similar thread. My fish, Marcel, seems to have just discovered his reflection in the corner of his tank. He keeps on flaring, and I'm a tad worried he will over do it.

Does anyone have any advice?

I've tried putting up a piece of cardboard around the corner of the tank, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.

How long has it been going on?

My Hannibal had a flare fest after I did a complete water change in his tank and rearranged it. He flared nearly constantly for over 24 hours. Even with lights off. He took breaks for breath. Despite all this flaring from a fish who had only flared a couple of times prior to that, he is fine.
You'll have to keep an eye open for blow-outs: tears in fins caused by flaring. Hannibal didn't get any, but it does happen.

One thing you could try if it seems that they exhaust themselves and still wont stop is give them a "time-out" by floating them in their tank. This would allow them to regain their strength if they've become exhausted.

They'll get used to it. My boy Cirque went nuts when he discovered his "evil twin" but they get over it in a few days. I wouldn't worry too much. (:

I just don't want to stress him out. He seems to go to either side of the tank and see himself or he'll start swimming back and forth.

He really should be fine. Our Hannibal did similar for over 24 hours straight with no harm. He should get used to the reflection with time and stop or only do it now and again.

When my males first went into the divided tank, they flared and "fought" through the mesh for three days straight. It's tough to watch them undergo stress, but really they adapt quite well. Just give it a few days, and if it's still a problem you can revisit trying to find a solution. (:
