One reason for a having a lid over the tank is to keep the air they breath, that's just above the surface, warm and humid. Many mebers feel that Betta don't like breathing cool dry air.

On the other hand, one of our most experienced and successful aquarists uses open top tanks.

This might be an interesting topic for discussion.

Another good reason for a lid is that bettas are jumpers. I have an open top tank and none of my girls have jumped, but my last boy, Apollo, jumped during a water change. Some will jump, others won't. In my open tank I keep the water line about 2.5 inches from the top of the tank.

Another problem is evaporation - I do a lot of water changes, but when I had fewer fish and only had to do one a week, I'd lose about a litre a day during summer.
