BettaChic is absolutely right - don't adjust your pH. Any swings in pH can cause immediate osmotic shock and it can kill your fish. I know, I experienced this first hand :( While a betta's natural habitat is softer water (7.2- 7.6) they can actually thrive at higher levels as well. My pH is as high as 8.2. In my larger, established tank it's 8.0. The most important aspect to the pH is that it stays stable. A stable pH is a healthy pH.

Thank you all for your contributions of information to my thread! I appreciate it. I need to get a testing kit next payday. I did take a sample of my water up to PetSmart and the girl that checked said everything looked fine. Fishy seems to be quite content. I just love to watch him. Friday I will do a 20% water change. My water is looking a tiny bit cloudy - but I guess that is normal eh? Also, another question - is it ok if I were to get some bloodworms for a little treat now and then? And how much is ok to give....I am so afraid over feeding! He gets 3 pellets twice a day - these are teeny tiny pellets. He gobbles it right up, too!

Bloodworms twice a week make a great treat. :) If you feel you are underfeeding him with the tiny pellets, try feeding 4-5 per sitting. If he gets bloated, drop it back down again.

Cloudiness is normal during a cycle. I wouldn't trust the shop testing, since you don't know what sort of tests they use. During the cycle, you want to do a water change every few days.
