New tank questions

This weekend I will be getting....
10gal tank: http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=3804453
Live plants: java fern, wisteria, anubius
Aquarium substrate: http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...uctId=11085575
heater: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Heater-1-ct/10291808
thermometer
fluorescent light (I don't know how many watts to get)

I am wondering how long it will take to cycle this tank
do I need to add bacteria in addition to the plants?
how many plants should I have?
what watt lamp do I need?
Can I add the decorations after the tank has cycled?

It depends how many of those plants you intend to add. The more plants and the faster growing they are (for instance, wisteria grows a lot faster than anubias and java fern), the quicker the cycle will be.

Don't add bacteria - without a source of ammonia, it will just die off and in a planted tank you really don't need it. Just add your ammonia source. With a decent amount of plants, a fish-in cycle would be safe.

I would add as many plants as you can, but I am known for stuffing my tanks absolutely full. Also look at anacharis, lacefern and ambulia (very fast growing).

Go for 2 watts - it allows you to grow medium light plants without stopping you from growing low-light ones. Talk to OldFishLady about other light specifics - she's an expert. :)

Why not add decorations during the cycle so that good bacteria grows on them too?

Most of the plants mentioned will need to be tied down on something. Java fern and anubias do best (In my experience) tied onto rock or driftwood. They are plants that don't do well when the rhizome gets covered. As long as your fish can still swim, you can never have too many plants! Fast growing plants such aswisteria and rotala, and other stem plants will actually help with the cycle quite a bit.

for a 10 gallon tank I would try to get an adjustable heater if possible. It seems to me the tetras are a hit or miss heater...some people love them some really dislike them....I have 2 that i use in my smaller tanks (2 gallon) and they keep it around 77-78...but not so sure about putting it in a larger tank...

I use floresent daylight bulbs with 6500K in my incandescent hoods...They can usually be found at walmart or home depot for pretty cheap. I try to keep my tanks around 1.5-2 watts per gallon.
