I'm glad I did my research too! I used to think eh, whatever. It's just a fish, who cares if it's in a half gallon or 5 gallon. But the more I read the more I realized how cruel it is! Now I have a heart for our fishy friends.
When I read the stories people post about pet store employees, I'm flabbergasted! One had said two male bettas can go together, another saying you should use distilled water ... it's awful! Someday, I'll work at a pet store and set things right! >:)

I know that stones would be easier to clean (and that's an attractive idea), but do you think it would affect healthy bacterial bloom? Or is that negligible?

I think stones could affect it.. but only slightly.
