Cleaning tank?

So I am buying my friends old 5 gal tank and putting some guppies in it, however, she had a gold fish in it and he kept getting cottonmouth (?). I told her to go ahead and dump the filter and I was planning on getting another one, but as far a tank cleaning goes how should I clean it to get rid of anything that might still be in it and prepare it for the guppies?

I would use as hot of water as you can stand.. vinegar works as well, a tiny bit mixed with water, or a tiny bit of bleach with a lot of water- make sure to rinse extra carefully if you use any of those to clean it out.

You can also let it sit in hot water with a tiny bit of bleach over night. I would probably do that personally.. I'm always overly cautious though.

Thanks so much! I am overly cautious too when it comes to my fish. Do you know how much bleach or vinegar I should to water amount?
