Besides the light over his tank, try shining some light in from the side.

I don't know how many watts you're using or what the color temperature is (that's measured in Kelvins; you might look it up). But 10 watts at 6500 K over a 2.5g tank ought to brighten things up.

BTW, if you look at lots of pictures of members' fish, it seems like dark-toned Betta are becoming more popular these days.

The lighting will make a difference too.. they will change colors and lighten/darken on their own, but didn't think about the lighting until it was mentioned then went back to some of my pictures.

I have an old old one of Xander when he was in his original tank with nothing but one of those LED lights- that can change color, and he is dark in there.
Him with a flashlight on him during a water change and to check his health.
Then him in his first upgrade under a regular light bulb at 40 watts.
Don't even get me started on my DDCT and CTs color difference in certain lights lol

So lighting can make a difference in fish.
