The blue stuff in the water is most likely methylene blue.
It it most likely added to prevent fungus and itch.

I just saw this thread. I am new to the site, and I'm sure a lot of the members that posted on here, have also seen my woes as of late. I feel the same as you. Every fishy has died within 2 days. I have yet to get another.

Yeah, I've noticed that my Walmart treats them HORRIBLY, but I suspect the reason they are so hardy is because they are so OLD. Not many people buy them from walmart these days, so they are over a year old. The petco and petsmart I go to sell out within the week, and all their bettas are barely 6 months!

I sell my bebies to a privately owned fish store. They take good care of them. I have to get my business license soon so I can sell to my Petsmart. (They never have stock)
