He was an amazing find... considering I have only ever seen Veils and Crowns around here. Got him for 5$
Java Fern, Anubias and marimo moss balls are all low light plants. They do well in pretty much any conditions, as long as they at least have some natural light.
As for the filter issue, it won't hurt the plants at all, at least for these ones, if you turn the filter off at night.
Though really, in a 5 gal tank like that, you probably should leave the filter running 24/7. (I think that could mess with the beneficial bacteria that live in the filter sponge.)
