Question Sorority Tank Question

How many females maximum in a 10 gallon? And how many females maximum in a 20 gallon? Want to set up a 10 gallon for as long as we live in this apartment...don't think they would allow too much more than a 10 and neither would my boyfriend....we have a small place!!! Eventually, I want a bigger tank, but with limitations, I can't do any bigger than a 10 gallon, for now. Been reading everything I can on sororities.....so want one!

Minimum 5 in any size tank to spread the aggression as they establish their pecking order. Once an alpha female is established the aggression typically dies down. You can do fine with 5 up to 7 in a 10 gallon, just don't add anything like mystery snails as it will spike the bioload.

Tank size helps but you also need to add lots of plants (Silk over Plastic) or Live plants.

Thanks!! When I start to buy for it, it will have mostly live plants with a few silk until the live ones fill in...not a big snail fan...so, no problem there!!!

How long should I let the aquarium run(with plants in it), before I put any of the girls in?

Depends. How often do you plan on doing partial water changes?

Cycling a tank can take weeks.. adding in all those girls at once into a newly established tank will cause the ammonia to spike to deadly numbers. Fish in cycle can be very rough and deadly. If you wish to do it, then I would purchase a liquid test kit and check daily the parameters and if ammonia is present, do a partial water change.
So the wait time depends on how safe you want to be, etc.

Wolfboy, not an 8 gallon, too small to safely make it a sorority. 10 gallons isn't even ideal, but it's the minimum.. sororities are fun, but natural instinct of the girls is to not live with another girl, so you have to give them the room to get away from another when needed and an 8 gallon is simply not big enough for the number of girls required- bio load would be too much, space would be too small.

I'm planning on buying a 15 gallon aquarium. Found a really good deal, if they still have them when I get paid. I also need to factor in that I need better heaters for my 2-1.8 gallon aquariums that are housing my 2 boys. But, I just got a water test kit and am planning, once fully set up, to cycle the 15 gallon at least a month before purchasing any girls. What is the ideal amount of girls in a 15 gallon? And are any cleaning fish/snails an option in a 15 gallon?

Planning on water changes at least 1-2 times a week, unless it needs to be done more.

15 gallons would safely hold 8 girls..

There are no true cleaning fish that will take away our job- but ghost shrimps are good at algae, they may also eat any excess food that has fallen to the bottom. But if you feed mostly pellets then that wouldn't be an issue. So if you have algae, then I would recommend ghost shrimp or a snail..

You can add in other peaceful fish, and have a lower amount of girls.. say 5 girls and a couple platies, or cories.

If you are not going to have live plants, then I would say 30-40% water change with vacuuming of the gravel once a week is plenty.
