How long should a betta live?

I have had 3 Bettas, and I am on my last. I moved it to a smaller tank because he could not catch a breath in a bigger tank. He is named Hatorio and has lived over 3 years and 6 months. The last month he has gone from swimming a little to not even moving his fins until he must come up for air. Now I can barely tell if he is alive, and he always is barely alive when I tap his shallow tank. I don`t know what to do with him he is a part of the family, but he can barely move. What can I do?

great job on keeping him alive for so long by the way. Typically bettas live about 3-4 years but i'm sure people have kept them a lot longer before. My guess is he is just getting old though. Just keep the water clean and make him as comfortable as possible.

:( Unfourtunatley Hatorio died today. He was too old to come up for air. Even in a tank with such little water it was inevitable. Well he did last long it still sucks, but it was good he died with little pain. I will get another betta, and hopefully he will live as long.

Well, I had the same question about what's wrong with my Betta "Brighton". He's brightened so many of my days. I've had him about 3 years and within the last week he has become so lethargic and lays on the bottom of the tank. His scales seem to be getting a gray color and he hardly has enough energy to swim up to eat.

I guess he is just getting old. I'm so sad, he's so beautiful. :(

Should I move him to a smaller bowl or keep the tank clean and just leave him alone?

How big is your tank? For a betta that lives for 3 years already, it sounds like he is showing signs of old age.
