The betta should be eating well. Also, watch your water parameters carefully.

They have a special organ called labyrinth that enables them to survive in oxygen-deficient waters. Not all anabantids however will do this I believe.

My 6 chicks all live in a filtered 10 gal, and get substantial weekly water changes, and still bob to the surface now and again. the legend says that if you listen really carefully when they stick their heads up out of the water you can hear them yelling prophanity at you. <shrug> :D

i would assume its normal as all 6 of my bettas and my 4 gouramis all do it :)

well i can only guess when a fish is happy but usually if its said it will just mope around at the bottom of the tank. anyways about the air thing bettas have a labyrinth organ so they actually breath air off by poking there head to the surface.

beetlebs: gouramis and bettas are in the same group because they both breath air from the surface with there labyrinth organ. all this air breathing is normal. (btw i own a 4 year old betta and a three spot gourami :D )
