Agree 100%- the ventral fins are too long to be a female (the small two by the belly.. the females tend to have shorter ones, males longer) and since he is just now growing into his fins.. I'd say he looks like a young VT, that was my first impression.

When you remove him and place him in his own home away from the ladies, I'm positive you'll start seeing a growth spurt of his fins and you can tell then. Normally takes around 7 months of age before the fins are fully grown.

my 3 gallon Pet Keeper was in the fish section at Petco. Pitiful compared to the size tanks you might get, but still an option xD Cheaper than the glass 2.5 gallon.... mine was $12

Love those kritter keepers at PetCo.. cheap and works just as good as any glass tank. Only difference is you have to provide your own light with something like a lamp or one of those clip on small ones.
