I have a goldfish named Oscar,(named after my uncle) only to find out that she was a girl. My uncle is a bigger guy and Oscar was the runt of the goldfish I bought only for her to become the biggest. So the name fits.

Personally I don't find it wrong to give your pet a more awesome name if it works for them.

i'd have a hard time renaming things, but its totally up to you! if they feel like their names are just stuck, i'd stick with it, but if you like calling them the other names better, then go for it!

Officially, my new betta's name is Ivan, but I call him "Fish stick." And my work betta's name is Wraith, but everyone but me calls him "Hashbrown." So I don't think it's a big deal. They don't know their names anyway.
