Well experiments done by breeders. No giants ever came out of the spawns. I doubt PetCo knows anything about the genetics of their fish.

I'm sure MrV is right in his assessment of Petco's knowledge of their kings' genetics.

This is all I know about giants: Betta Splendens - Half Moon, Double Tail, Crown Tail Bettas - The Giant Betta

(There's another, more technical one, on her site. I can't find it right now.)

That and the two articles referenced at the bottom of this page.

For unknown reasons, hotlinks to her site don't seem to work. Here's the URL that gets me there. Type www. in front of it.

MrVamire is right about petco king's betta. They are not real giants, just old betta and they are at their maximum size for a round tail plakat. I don't know why petco call those fishes king, they would just make a lot of confusions for some of you and also to make more sells.
I know a store owner in Sacramento, he sell the same kind and same size for $4.99 each and i believe petco should sell their "kings betta" around that price as well.
I don't think you would see a real giant either at petco or petsmart, they can not even afford to get good quality betta with good colors, i dont think you will get giant hm or giant hmplakat.

Nothing I've read from MrVampire leads me to this conclusion. Nor do I expect that this is true.

Your opinion may be influenced by the quality of fish at your local petco. I wouldn't shop them for show caliber Betta, but they do have many handsome healthy pet fish worth owning.
