Cycling..?

Let me see if I have this right...

I put in something (like some fish food or a cooked shrimp - not raw, right?) for an ammonia source.

Ammonia will build and then NitrItes will appear.

After NitrItes, then NitrAtes will come show up.

Once ammonia & nitrIte go away and only nitrAte is there, the tank is cycled.

Correct?

-----------

I want to have my tank cycled before I try with another Betta.

Oh, and I have a couple of live plants, this is still OK with cycling, right?

Thank you all!!

OK, I have been reading up on this and I came across something... One site says that tanks under 10 gallons won't cycle and *if* they do that they can't stay stable.

Is this true? I don't think it is, but now I am wondering.

I got my 5 gallon cycled around the end of January and it's still fine.

Oh ok, I will re-read the sticky about the shrimp.

And I did say tanks *under* 10 gallons are supposedly unstable according to the one website I saw. I have a 5 gallon I am trying to cycle.
