Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (ich, ick, white spot disease) is the most common and persistant parasite. Ich may occur in any freshwater aquarium, so acidic or alkaline water doesn't make a difference.
The best way to prevent ich is to create a stress free environment for your betta(s) and create a frequent water changing regimen. Ich is very common to occur when you first buy or move your fish, so try not to change your fish's habitat too frequently.
