Dead Bettas at Petco

Hey all! I got a betta for my birthday back in February, and I just made an account after a month of reading this forum (gotta say it sure saved my fish...and made me spend way more money on my fish than I planned on spending haha).

I wish my first post was on a happier note, but a few days ago I was over at Petco looking around for a new plant, and I decided to look at their fish. I was shocked when I saw 4 dead floating betta fish in their tiny plastic containers! You would think the people there would monitor and make sure they didn't have any dead ones for the sake of their customers, right? Have any of you guys had this experience at a pet/fish shop?

I'm lucky that my LFS has pretty good fish care but occasionally I see the odd floating goldy or ones that haven't made it in the quarentine tanks. I always annoy them by telling them that "this fish has white spot" and "by the way, those have fin rot" :D If I don't tell them, I dunno when someone else will.

Sadly most petshops and Walmart do not take care of the bettas.
Most of mine had ammonia levels through the rooof

Poor things... I've seen the same at Petco myself. There were three dead females all right next to eachother behind some live ones. :(

Yep. I set two poor dead guys on the counter by the employees who were talking in the back and just walked away. They looked at me funny, but actually noticed the dead fish.
Sadly, they're only making minimum wage, aren't given proper training, and are usually short-handed for the amount of care they need to give their fish. If the people at the corporate level cared more, it would trickle down and bettas would be seen as living things, not just chipped merchandise to be tossed.
