Betta has never flared?

I've had Winchester for about 6 months now and when I got him he was a TINY tiny tiny fish. I'm sure he was still very young. Now he's a big boy but he has never flared. Even when I give my bettas their daily flaring exercise with mirrors. He looks at it and swims away.
Is it something they have to learn or it's supposed to come naturally? Appart from that, he's very healthy and happy. He has a nice heated, filtered 3 gallon tank with lots to explore, makes plenty of bubble nests and eats like a pig.

Any theories?

I've never seen one of my guys flare. I've had him since November. Even when he sees his neighbor he just looks over at him. On the other hand, my newest which is tiny, flares at everything.

Something that helped me to get Poseidon to flare was to get him a zoo med floating exercise mirror and leave him alone with it for a little bit. When I go back to get the mirror out, I can catch a glimpse of him flaring.

He also built a small bubble nest afterward... but either he destroyed it or it just didn't last long.

Girls flare too - my girl Athena flared far more readily than Apollo ever did. Some males are just really laid back and don't flare at anything. :)

i have a male who just recently started flaring. i've had him for about a year or so, and he just, within the last few months, started flaring. :B it's not uncommon, but it's not very common.
