Tank Temperature

Yeah so my heater isn't very good and i can't afford a new one. It only keeps the heat up to about 72 degrees will he be OK?

72 is an alright temperature for now, just be sure that it is a steady temperature until you can go and get him a new one.

72 degrees Fahrenheit is not an acceptable temperature long term as it lowers the bettas life span, stresses the betta out, and lowers the bettas metabolism. all with negative results. This is only okay for a relatively small amount of time around 1 week. What is the tank size? if its larger it will be easier to maintain a higher temperature level that will be optimal for the betta

I agree with Mo. It is not healthy for a betta to be exposed to lower than ideal temperatures for an extended period of time. Also, I would be worried by any heater not working properly and would immediately bin it.

It poses the risk of malfunctioning further, and either turning the heat off completely or boiling your fish if the thermostat doesn't shut off.

Can you put his tank in a warm room? Like, my Bowser is in a 2.5g on my desk with the desklamp and the apartment's heater is under the desk so the two keep his tank pretty warm. Somwtimes with his heater the temp reach 85F (which is the extent of the heat he gets) You don't want to stress him out with temp fluctuations but if you can get him in a warm room or place heat packs around his tank. . That could help.

WalMart sells small internal heaters for as low as 11.98. I know not everybody has this money- I'm in a similar situation myself but if you could sell a couple dvd's or cd's or hold a lemonade/bakesale stand (have the younger kids do it) to raise a couple dollars.

**Edit-- I'd return the heater then. A heater should have the tank warmed after at least 2 hourrs. What's the wattage of the heater? And what size tank do you have?

Do you have a pic of the heater? The wattage should be listed on the actual heater and on the box it came in ^.^

Catlantic:

7.5W is way too small. Will work though summer, but you'll want to upgrade in the Fall. You'd want a 25W or so.

Good luck!
