Unhappy Sky Corrigan has open sores and white spots

Hello all!

I am new here to Bettafish but am not new to having a bettafish this is my second one! I love him so much and it pains me to see him like this.

I've had him for about 2 years now. He lives in a 1/2 gallon tank - it is not filtered or heated but I have a thermometer and I monitor the water. I have always changed the water once a week and gave him the appropriate amount of food.

For about two months now I noticed some bubbles forming on his body particularly on the back fins and the worse one is right behind is left fin - that one has become an open sore (it was white and puffy but not it just broke through his scales and I can see inside the open sore). Now every time I go to change his water I see pieces of his scales and body coming off! It's so horrible.

He also has white spots on his face.

About two weeks ago I started treatment, after consulting with a friend of mine who breeds bettas as well as looking at all of the websites. The treatment has been - keeping the water at a warm temperature, putting aquarium salt in, stress coat, and today I just changed the water and I am trying to see if BettaFix will work. (He was once sick before with fin rot and I used bettafix and it worked well!).

I am extremely worried because this open sore is nasty and I don't know if it is a parasite, internal/external bacteria, or fungus or what!

Also for about a week and half he hasn't really been eating much and he is active he still swims around goes to the top but he has become more lethargic than before.

What should I do? Should I get Fungus Eliminator or at PetCo they don't have any ampicillin or anything like that but they do have Rid Fungus, PimaFix, MelaFix, and PetSmart does have Tetracyline.

Any recommendations? Please I would really appreciate all help!

These pictures are from about 11 days ago. His face and body hasn't gotten worse, only that white cloudy part - it fell off and now it is just an open sore.

Eeek. I'm sorry for your boy! If you can you should do 100% water changes every day. I can't see your pictures. White and fluffy is usually fungus or columnaris, hard to say. I would stock up on both an antifungal and antibacterial (petsmart usually has more than tetracycline; mine has erythromycin, the maracyns, and sulfa drugs too- does yours not?) just in case he 'declares' himself. Usually at that point you will need to act fast so having medications on hand already is helpful.

Hopefully someone with more experience, and who can see your pics, will be able to help you further.

Hoping for the best for you! I know how hard it is to watch your favorite get sick.

I think those 'bubbles' that are forming look like what my fish had a month ago, I have thread here too about "possible advanced fin rot"

The bubble formed on mine right at the base of his dorsal fin, swelled up, turned kind of red for a while, then burst... it's been about the same since then.

I've started treating him with Maracyn and a higher level of aquarium salt during water changes. His behavior hasn't changed, he just has that weird sore!

okay thanks guys for your help!

Right now he is in a 1/2 gallon tank unfiltered and unheated, should I get him a bigger tank and get a heater/filter? would that be better for him?

Tomorrow I will definitely go out and get the fungal medication for him.

@werewolf when the bubble burst what came out could you tell? And do you think they are in pain? Also did it heal?

Right now mine is pretty happy in a filtered 1-gallon tank, they're a decent price at Petco.

When it burst the inside looked white, I don't think anything came out, per se. But it looks pretty similar to the one behind your fish's pectoral fin.

No problem! Though unfortunate for our fish I'm glad to know SOMEONE out there has the same problem! I'll let you know if/when Tulio improves :3

Okay good luck to you! And definitely let me know how it goes, I feel so bad for our fishies. I hope they aren't in too much pain.
