Question My first pair?

Alright, so after some contemplation I decided to start small for my first spawn. Rather than spend 150$ importing a pair right off the bat, I'm using what I already have. Though it is no doubt going to be an unconventinal pairing that I know won't produce any IBC stadard fish, I have to start somewhere right?

Anyway, I have to choose between two males to pair this this lovely lady; Blue and yellow HM (though the more I look, the more I'm seeing super delta in her tail..) I would love if you'd help me pick her partner.

And my two males;

First, Harlen.

And second, Apollo. (Younger photo, he's darkened in body-color quite a bit.)

Male 1 is a rose tail... don't ever breed him.

Male 2 isn't perfect but I'd rather breed him than a rose.

I agree with Mr.V. breeding rosetails can result in deformities, and can lead bettas prone to tailbiting, the extra finnage impacts them greatly in most cases, while the other doesnt have the best body shape/finnage but is more desirable than breeding a rosetail.

To be safe, male#2 - because male #1 may be a rose tail or rose descendent thus may carry genetic defects.

You don't have to buy top dollar fish. Pet shop fish IMO is OK as long as you know what to look for. Just memorize the standards before shopping.

I tend to scrutinize AB bettas because I don't want you to over pay for pet shop quality.

Yes yes yes!! I have some very nice pet store breeder fish that can beat an AB betta any day.

The nicest fish are generally $25-$35. www.bettysplendens.com is a great place to look for standards.

Agreed! I have two mom n' pop shops near me that tend to have nice fish, but one stopped selling bettas and the other has been mysteriously closed for the last week. ):

They were saying that some small 'Mom and pop' pet shops have nicer fish than Aquabid or equal quality.
