There are no set rules.

Also once I was sold a pair of purple half moons. Tried to spawn them, and the male ended up getting freaked out from the "female". Two weeks later the female grew fins and started trying to flirt with a neighboring female. Needless to say that "female" ended up being a great dad.

Lol, im like absorbed on all these posts rite now :P but yeahh it happens, he is also very bad for breedin he and the gal ignore each other

Mr Vampire has a point! femlaes can have long fins, but never as long as a male... Plus, younger ones can be easily mistakened for being females.

However don't expect a male to always breed. I've had ones who just are not good for breeding because they lose interest too fast, they are not aggressive enough, they are too aggressive or they eat the eggs/fry :)

Very true - I'm getting 5 today from a breeder/importer. They'll be better than petsmart or this store :) (plus if one is blue there ISN'T a 98% chance he'll die ) Best part she was nice and put the extra 2 in there lol so I paid for 3...
