Betta Tankmates

I'm thinking of getting a 2.5- 4 gallon fish tank. I'm getting a male betta fish. Which tankmates do you recommend? I've heard Assassin snails are good, but are there any fish that would be compatible with a tank of this size and a betta? Also, do they need any additional food or care? The tank will be filtered. I'm going to have an artificial plant as well as some sort of aquarium décor. Please include info about what the suggested animals respective needs (food, filter, temperature, additional care, etc.) are.

Other than the snail, the simple answer is no the tanks are too small.

First, Welcome to the Forum!

+1 NickAu. People add fish and shrimp to tanks that small but they are ignoring the needs of the fish/shrimp. A couple of Assassin Snails are perfect.

Thanks for the welcome. When I asked this question to an employee, they said that in a tank of that size, a few Dario's are ok. I'm not weather or not to buy them, and if I do end up deciding to get some, what do you think is a good number to get? Thanks in advance.

It's unfortunate that most LFS employees are in the business to sell and go by what they are told and not what they know and the consumer .... and the fish .... pay the price. Dario are not easy fish to keep. First, they require live food as most will not eat prepared and, second, they require lots of plants; especially moss. In such small quarters they would be fine alone in even a 2.5 but not with a Betta. BTW, Dario are my favorites and I have various Dario species in four of my seven tanks with Betta but I also keep live foods such as Banana, Walter and Grindal worms, feed frozen and heavily plant the tanks.

As I said, adding fish or shrimp to tanks that small is ignoring the needs of the fish. The only exception would be a five gallon with dense cover. The first photo is Hobbs and the second is Puck in their 5.5 gallon tanks. The pictures sorta kinda show what I mean about how many plants you'd need:

The petshop employee has no idea what they are talking about. Some Bettas are fine with tank mates and some are not, I have a crowntail thats a killer, He even attacks my hand and the siphon hose.

They also suggested one other small fish that I can't recall. It was a fish that would need a sponge filter. Any ideas?

I have no idea what fish they're talking about but if you trust that your pet store's employees know what they're talking about then you should probably go with what they suggest. Have fun!
