Betta community stocking plan

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and thought I'd bounce my stocking plan off all y'all

I have a super chill male betta living in a 10 gallon with 5 ember tetras and I want to add 5 corydoras habrosus to the tank (when my LFS gets them in, I went to look at them today and the lady in front of me literally bought the last ones! Sadness!)

Since I didn't add them today, lol, does anyone see any problems with my plan? It brings me to about 82% on Aqadvisor, if that helps.

Hi and Welcome to the Forum!

You can add 2-3 more to your Ember shoal and when the Habrosus come back in add 6-7. These fish are so small they do fine in shoals of this size in a 10 gallon.

Oh awesome! I wish had known that earlier, lol! They did have more ember tetras but they almost always do. I had originally planned to bring that shoal up to 8 or even 10 individuals but I thought if I wanted the teeny Cory cats I'd have to keep it at 5. I appreciate the advice

Nano fish stay so small you have a lot more leeway when stocking. Of course, a lot depends on filtration, too. I run two filters in my 10 and 20 long because I tend to overstock. The other reason is I always have a cycled filter should one conk out.

Just noticed you're in Tennessee, too.

Well, that's a good point, I'm not over filtered, but I'm heavily planted. I'm running a Marina Slim S10 HOB with a 55GPH flow rate, but I turned it down to about 2/3 strength because it seemed like Sharptooth (my 5 year old named him ) the betta was struggling in the full flow. I've got Seachem Matrix and Pothos vine in the HOB instead of the media it came with. I've done a dirted tank with a sand cap so my plants are super happy in there and the water stays very clear with that amount of filtration and my parameters stay 0/0/0 so far. I did have some cory cats in there (2 spotted ones), but one died (he never acted right, but I kept hoping he'd heal up from whatever was wrong with him, but alas, he didn't make it), and then I added 4 Sterba's but they were so hyper they were bothering the betta so I moved them to my 29 Gallon (betta-less) community tank. But even with 5 bigger cory cats in there it stayed solid. I've got 2 marina slims on the 29 (also dirted and heavily planted), but I think I'm going to buy myself an Eheim classic canister filter for that tank next month for my birthday and then I could move the S20 to the Betta tank (which would also leave me TWO S10's that wouldn't be in use... I think I might need more betta tanks )

Yay for Tennessee! I'm outside Nashville, how bout you?

Here's my tank. The betta is so much prettier with the light on him: He's just a $5 betta from my LFS. They keep theirs in square boxes with lights and a water change system... somewhat step up from Petco and the others. I always want to buy all the bettas and give them homes when I see them looking sadly at me from their little cups. Petco had a gorgeous blue and white HMEE boy today who was very active, I think he'd have been fine if I'd have had a place to put him... but I'm conflicted about buying bettas there because it supports the bad treatment.

Nice looking setup and Betta! You must go to Aquatic Critter??? I'm in La Vergne which is between Nashville and Murfreesboro if you're not familiar.

Yes! Love the Aquatic Critter! Just wish I'd have called them today to hold those c. Habrosus, but I'm going to bug Phillip on Monday to see if he can order me some, lol. I'm in Hendersonville, about 20 min north of N'ville, so about 35 minutes hike down to the Aquatic Critter and some days with the construction on 65 it's worse at least it's close to the zoo, I can take my kids down and get a 2-fer, lol. I've gotten all my fish from them and had a pretty good success rate, I think (again, so new, not sure I'd know the difference, lol!), but I started stocking both tanks end of May and have about a 90% survival rate. Have lost 3 fish, 2 White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and the one c. melanistius. One minnow seemed to have septicemia, died about 48 hours after I brought home my first half dozen of them. The cory I'm not sure what was wrong. He didn't seem to be sick, or have parasites, or anything, was just lethargic and sat around most of the time with his dorsal fin clamped which is unusual for them based on the behavior of the other one. One minnow died about 48 hours after I brought home the second half dozen a month or so later. It was one of the new ones, and I hadn't noticed any odd behavior. And then this week, my one WCMM fry that had made it almost to adulthood disappeared. I think the cory cats ate the body. My mystery snail eats most of the eggs, which is fine, I don't need a bunch of fry in that tank, but I was sad that my one little guy that had beaten the odds suddenly vanished. Of course that tank is open, but if it jumped, I didn't find it. It was there one night and gone the next morning. I've got the water line down an inch and half-ish so I'm pretty sure they can't jump out, but I could be wrong. So many things still to learn.
