Needed to share this...

I had a "date", and had nothing to do for five hours while I waited, so I went into PetSmart. I wanted to get a pretty VT I saw the other day, but he was gone, so I sorted through the fish, pulled out the sick ones and told them what to do for treatment. Then a couple and a kid walked in and were looking at the fish before finding the bettas. It was the usual "kid wants a pet, let's get him a betta". And I don't like stepping in because Speech taught me opinions make you wanna punch people, but then I was asked a question:
"Is this betta okay?"
They had a little baby boy in their hands, part of the new shipment. But my favorite boy I didn't get to smuggle home had a sibling somewhere, and I pulled him out to look at him. Picture of apparent health, considering he's been there a good long while, but he wasn't my type. I explained that I was always here looking at the bettas and I recommended this one, who doesn't flare, doesn't do anything particularily weird, and just really wants a good home.
"What do we feed them?"
While they picked out the food, I told them everything I had learned about bettas. They're picky, some don't eat right away, some have smaller mouths than others. So with that in mind, they selected food (cannot remember exactly what brand they picked, but it wasn't what I normally get). I told them how much and how often I fed my bettas, but said that I wasn't the top expert, I was just a kid with twelve of the creatures, and the food recommendation wasn't a set-in-stone rule. I helped pick out a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter, a heater, live plant bulbs and two plastic plants for the little guy to hide behind while his bulbs grew.
"We didn't know what we were getting into."
At least they were honest and didn't try getting the "twinsies" half gallon betta "habitat" and try to get another. They listened to me and I was pretty pleased. I feel I could have shared some more knowledge, but I was already overloading them, so I let it go at that.
Then the last thing I hear before they round the corner?
"She should work here"
Gosh dang it, do I ever so want to.
But my twelve I got now would quickly double!

Things like that are the reason I decided to get a job at PetSmart.. Well that and the discounts. I've gone through headaches trying to explain Betta care to people already, 80% of the time they don't care to listen, but when they do listen, boy, it feels good. I always feel a little pang in my heart when one of my favorites gets bought by someone who doesn't have a tank with them, because I can't see what kind of tank or god forbid a vase they're going into. Usually they get sort of offended if I ask questions, so I've learned to not bother.

So far I've gotten a lady to get her son a 5g tank setup with a filter, a heater, thermometer, water conditioner, and Omega One pellets. The other lady got two Bettas and two 1g Minibow setups (she had a budget, that's the biggest I could convince her to get), water conditioner, two heaters, two thermometers, and some Omega One pellets also. I wish more would listen.

Check out my journal - SIP to all of the Bettas I've lost

I agree, many don't want to listen..... I cringe everytime I go into a bank that has those bud vases with a poor betta just hanging there.
Terrible.

ps...Jaws...how did you date work out? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Date went fine. We walked around the mall and sniffed all the candles we could and shared stuff about ourselves and made vague plans to meet again only for the communication to stop there. I haven't talked to her since then. I have a feeling she wasn't interested in getting a girlfriend as she talked mainly about boyfriends, which is fine, you know, because when you go in bi with another bi, sometimes she leans a different degree than you do XD Kinda reminds me of those commercials where the guy's like "we're never going to see each other again" and the girl's like "no no" and he's like "fair enough" or whatever. You guys see that commercial? But that day was really stressing me out and the two great things that happened that day was the date and the fact my CD player in the car started playing my RED CD ;-; I was sho happy...

Glad you had a good store experience helping that family. Can understand the comment on betta count doubling. If I worked at a shop with bettas I'd raid each shipment and buy the ones that got my interest before anyone woudl put them in the death bowls.

That's awesome! I talked to a girl on my last Petco visit before leaving for school about different Betta pellets. He Betta was having some bloating issues. Send was using stuff that wasn't too great, so I recommended Omega One and that was what she got.
If I had a car I would definitely be working at either PetSmart or Pet Supplies Plus. Someday when I get a car, I will do that.

I can remember when I started getting into bettas. I was about six, and my parents were buying all the stuff. My second fish was lucky enough to get a filtered 1-gallon tank, but no heater... I would've been so ecstatic to have someone show me the ropes. Instead I had to learn through trial and error, and a lot of fish suffered in the process. It's awesome these people took the matter seriously and took advantage of the knowledge you had available to them.

When I got my first betta, LittleManSam, I had no clue about care, didn't know what questions to ask, hoped that the clerk at the local Petco would give me a laundry list of essentials.
That didn't happen as I found out 6 weeks into owning Sam.
This same clerk, then gave me horrible advice about stirring up the bottom and take "alittle" water out.
That was when Sams fins were starting to disintegrate from ammonia spike, which she didn't test for when I brought the water sample. ( I now know).

I don't know how Sam lived thru their continuing bad advice or lack of customer support/communication.
There is not continuity in many of the fish depts. thru many stores, even the manager said that about the abovementioned clerk.
As the manager of the dept...who's fault is that?
He said I should have bought a book instead. ( really..that was the answer to almost killing my betta ?????????????)

That was when I began interviewing managers & the full time employees of the fish depts. in a 25 mile radius. I would bring a picture of Sam and a water sample to
see what they thought. Only 2 where not only interested but had been long time fish keepers on their own and knowledge to back it up.
Kudos Jaws..you did good.

It takes some time to find someone to "trust" and my guys helped me understand how to bring Sam back to full raging beauty again.

And at the same time, I found this forum and the excellent help I have received from the experienced members and thoughtful moderators.

Yes, it is now up to all of us who have been through the worst, to educate other customers in the fish department.
We owe it to our little buddies, even if they don't belong to us. If it helps one person not be heartbroken like we have all been one time or another, it is well worth the time.

Kudos to Jaws....you did good
