Smile The story of your Betta

Figured it might be fun to share the stories of how you got your betta and the journey they've had.

I guess I'll start XD

My mom bought a 'back to the roots' aquafarm kit for my sister. It came with a coupon for a free veiltail. When we went to petco to get my sister a fish, she insisted on getting a mustard gas halfmoon plakat, and so my mom forced me to get a veiltail.

We didn't have a tank for him, or any equipment. But my mom had me get him anyways. So I picked one of the healthier looking fish, hoping he could survive the harsh conditions that were to come.

And so we set up the aquafarm for my sister, but the pump proved to be too strong for her smaller fish and it was given to mine, who I named Apollo.

He was kept in the aquafarm for quite a while, until I realized it was growing mold, and Apollo's health was dropping. Because of that, I 'modified it'. The top was totally taken off, so it was open air. I did a 100% tank clean, got a heater, modified the pump so that it was more of a filter and got some aquatic plants to handle excess nitrates since my mom wouldn't let me get a real filter.

Later on he developed constipation, so I gave him some blanched peas and fasted him for a bit.

Then I made a hammock for him out of an old suction cup, some weather-resistant fabric, and hot glue, and he can be seen there chilling very often now X3

Later on, I realized aquafarms have been known to kill the bettas inside due to some unhappy reviews, so I'm glad the mold came first XD

The mold was an excuse to modify the tank, since I'm allergic to all different types of spores and pollen.

-----
So yeah, that's Apollo's story,

Share your betta story below!

Well, the story of my first betta is sad. I was not a good fish keeper...

Basically, I begged for a fish for MANY years... It stated when I was 3 and I'm not 15 so...

The answer was always 'no'. :( But I wouldn't take no for an answer so I kept asking. When I was 13 or so, I realized how pretty bettas were and decided that was the fish I wanted.

A year later, my parents were finally convinced and we went to the pet store.

I got a male VT and named him Jim. He had a one gallon tank with a filter, gravel, and plastic plant. Two weeks later I bought him a leaf hammock, though he died the next week so he never really got to use it...

Sad ending, right?

My current betta has a much better life, hahaha. Though I have a journal about her so I'm not gong to post about her here :)

Aw, that kind of stinks. I remember my mom made the mistake of saying yes to my request for a betta back when I was three.

He was a deep blue veiltail, and we kept him in a trashy bowl without a heater or filter

we had no idea how to care for fish .-.

Sadly, I think everyone does that XD Unless you have parents who really know exactly what they're doing, most people can probably say they kept a fish in a bowl and though it was fine.

One of my friends has a CT who is actually almost 6 years old and when she got him he was kept in a bowl with water straight from tap. He now has a nice tank with a heater and all that but we're always like "HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?!" XD

I've had a lot last year, many of them have sad endings though... Although I think I did my best and I got all but one from a LPS so I think that might have something to do with their sad farewells.:( I'll start with the first one I got, Pebbles. She was a "baby" betta, had real fins and was striped(looked very similar to a sparkling goruami). I raised her for months and she blossomed into this beautiful fish. Depending on the lite she would be red, teal, blue, or purple. Then she died out of no-where... I had her in a heated, filtered, 5.5g(all of them are heated and filtered). Don't really know why she passed honestly. She was nicknamed "Ruthless Queen" because anything living(besides snails) she'd want to kill...
Keshet was the next one I got, I bought him a month after I bought Pebbles. He had swim bladder and I really bought him on a whim because I was upset at how so many had SB. He recovered in little over a week and his fins started to grow more. He's got a real irid, is a double tail plakat, has red and blue on him, but is primarily brown. Ironically he's the only one from my LPS that's still alive. He was the only one I saw was sick and bought. He's a go-lucky fellow and loves attention, but not shrimp. Shrimp scare him...
Rory the Gladiator I saw a week before Pebbles passed and really wanted to get him. He was a gorgeous copper dragon scale halfmoon plakat with almost perfect form. Didn't get him since I didn't have space though, so I had to leave him. Well a week passed and pebbles was no longer here, so I went to get him. I have a funny story with his purchase as well. I had him in my hand and was looking at their plants, well a employee said"do you have a tank?"
I replied, "Yeah, a 5.5g"
He said, "We have some cool plants over here that just came in."
Me, "Yeah, those are neat."
Realising he wasn't going to make a sale he walked of and said, "Well, it was worth a shot."
Rory was such a sweet heart, he died from something too. Don't know what it is, looking back I saw a few red flags, but still, he just kind of passed...
Jet was Roden's roommate in a divided ten, he was a silly little thing. Big bark, little bite. Him and Roden even spent a night together on Roden's side without any harm done! He would glare at Roden, but would hide if he ever got near him... he was pitch black, but he got dropsy and passed.
Pegasus was going to be Roden's new roommate, he was a beautiful purple marble. He really was such a beauty. But within three days of QT he developed this fungas that covered him and passed away.
Roden was a chill dude, red fins and a dark body. Very beautiful. But he developed fin melt and had some other miss-fortunes, along with me getting busy and having a hard time with adding the meds, he ended up passing.
Blossom is a large pink girl, she's like jaws. She'll attack you(and it'll hurt sometimes), she's very aggressive and would never work in a sorority or community. She's funny though. I adopted her from a member on another forum and really love her!
So these all happened between may-January. A tough year for my betta pals, at least Blossom and Keshet are sticking around! Sorry to hear about everyone else's sad stories, may they swim in peace.:(

My very first betta was given to me by one of my brothers friends back 15 years ago when I was 14. I named him Vincent. He was blue and red veiltail. I can't remember when he died, but I do remember becoming very busy and no longer cared for my fish.

Then 3 years ago I saw my friend having a betta in a large vase and I wanted to have one. So I put my vase with stones and filled with water on my kitchen counter. My husband asked what is that? I said I am pretending to have a fish. Well one day he came home with a teal veiltail. He shortly died in a tragic accident.

But then came Swishy, a red crowntail. And a new bowl! I realized he hated his bowl and I actually knew nothing about fish so we upgraded him to a 10 gallon heated and filtered with live plants. He did not make it a month.

That's the story of my first bettas.

Maybe... I was originally going to go with just Gladiator, but then someone suggested Rory the Gladiator. And Rory was one of my favourite characters as well(so's Roden, but from a book), thus he became know as Rory the Gladiator.:D

I've told this story on the forums a few time, but always love telling it. :)

Sushi was/is my first ever betta. About 2 years ago, my parents divorced and I went to live with my dad and became and raised all kinds of hell. Went through a horrible teenage rebel stage. Anyways, the area I lived at, every store you could imagine was a 2 minute walk(not exaggerating) and luckily, Petco was one of those stores. I was in online school, and basically roamed free during the day, and decided to go to Petco. I went in a saw the baby bettas and saw this brown one labeled "Baby Boy" on it, and fell in love. I called my father and said "Hey dad, can I have $15 to buy lunch?" he said yes, and proceeded to transfer $15 into my bank account. I snatched up that little tiny brown baby, bought a 1 gallon tank, a house, gravel, and off I went. I had Sushi the day before, and looked at this baby betta and though "Hmm Sushi. That shall be your name!" And Sushi it was. My dad came home and I was over come with guilt and showed him what I had bought, he chuckled, thankful I didn't buy something horrible, and he took me to Petco, bought me an adult betta, a 2.5 gallon, more decor, and gravel. I didn't do any research on bettas, nothing. I just bought them and that was it, and somehow, Sushi has lived for 2 years!(The other died at 4 months)
How she has lived this long is a mystery. She had no filter, no heater. But was still the most energetic and happiest fish you could imagine. I cleaned her tank 1 every 1 1/2- 2 months, and when I did, I always did a 100% water change, which believe it or not, never put her in shock or hurt her. Also, I have never cycled any of her tanks. Man, do I know you should now. I fed her 3 pellets a day, and that was it. She went through so much living with me! I thank her endlessly for putting up with me, which all was worth it because now she is in a giant 10 gallon, heated and filtered. :)

Proud owner of 7 Precious Bettas:
Urania, Lux, Petra, Perseus, Sirius, Comet, Tabasco
Forever In My Heart:
Sushi(My Angel), Tutankhamun, Jose

Some fish really are special.

Before I got my current fish, I had a mosquitofish named Shale I got from a school project. Many years back, I kept her in a planted 1 gallon with 2 snails. Somehow she lived 3 years, which is 1 year more than the average life expectancy XD
