What happened?...

So I had a hiatus of about six or more years from the betta hobby, and recently decided to start up again and look for new stock. Back in the day, Aquabid used to be filled with top quality bettas from Thailand from the best breeders. Today, I can find none of the same breeders/sellers (I understand years change things but I know Thailand breeders do this as a profession not a hobby). All of the bettas seem to focus more on color than any finnage quality. 'Koi' and 'dragon scale' seems to be the only thing being listed, with curled, awful dorsal fins or not even true Halfmoon caudal fins. I've seen a lot of rosetails up for auction too which I stay far away from. I know none of these new sellers and they are asking quite a bit for poor quality bettas (in my opinion), they seem to think the coloring/pattern is more important.

Did I miss something in my time away, are Thailand sellers using another site or what happened? I was able to find some breeders, such as Aquastar71, on Facebook but it seems he's not listing auctions anymore either. He will post a video of a male every now and then on his Facebook and ask you message for a price. That makes it hard for me to find specific colors. Anyone have any input on the shift in quality?

I imagine it is partly to do with supply and demand. It seems many hobbyists are willing to overlook issues with form and finnage provided the fish is a rare or unusual colour. Being that it's a business for most of these overseas breeders, it doesn't make sense to waste time and resources on producing fish that have a limited market. It's likely most of these fish are going to pet homes, rather than being shown or bred from. Then there's also the fact that breeders retain their best stock, so their lesser quality fish are what are more likely to be listed on Aquabid.

I agree with LBF. They breed what they sell best. It's called marketing. I've also heard some betta farms were completely destroyed by the flood in 2011 and lost some great lines of bettas.

Honestly, a few imperfect finnage seems to be alright with me. What I find to be absolutely deplorable in the "short body" bettas, that were bred with obvious deformities, they're usually plakats, and double tail to boot, just to make the fish suffer even more.

And they put him as 'highly prizrd/' just makes me so sad.
