Thoughts?

So, recently at my petco, I've noticed an increase of new interesting Betta types being sold. Wanted to know if these are just new to my store or are actual Betta types. The reason I'm curious is because I believe I have two of the three types.

The first is what is being labeled as a Black Orchid. Ironically, my male was mislabeled and he has since colored out to be this type (picture below is before and after). His head is almost completely black now with a touch of blue incidence throughout.

Secondly is a White opal. Pretty self explanatory. Mine was advertised as such and shelved in a separate area of the store to mark its exclusivity alongside the third type. Rose Gold? This last one seems a little less believable as their coloring just isnt as vibrant as one would thing...they seem a bit muddy. I dont have one of these as they dont really grab my interest.

Anyway, I'd love to hear any or all opinions!IMG_20180408_090256_947.jpgIMG_20180421_110144_815.jpgIMG_20180428_112613_551.jpg

Stores both make up and steal real names for Betta colors and patterns. Two made up are White Opal and Rose Gold. This is a Black Orchid Betta:

Unless the color is off, your boy looks to be blue. But it is difficult to tell without a flaring photo like the one above.

I think my boy is an Black Orchid. The picture I posted is really hard to tell, but he does have the black points and blue accents. In all honesty, I think he is a very poor example of a black orchid (I mean, he's a petco fish). Unfortunately he only flares during dinner, so it's really hard to capture him. He is also deformed with a curved spine...so definitely not the best specimen, but I love him.

What would you then call the white fish that I have? I figured that the rose gold and the opal were fake...lol.

The picture below is the same fish just earlier in his transition, but you can see his colors more clearly.IMG_20180408_090256_945.jpg

Your boy is a gorgeous platinum or white.

Do you have a recent photo of your other boy? A Black Orchid is defined as a black Betta with streaks of steel blue in the fins. The body is black. Note how the steel blue is patterned in the example. Very distinct. It is my understanding Black Orchids can have white on their ventral tips but not on their body.

Here is an updated picture. It was super hard to snap it because he has trouble swimming with his deformity. IMG_20180617_200903_313.jpg20180617_200352.jpg20180617_200240.jpg

Awesome! Thank you! I'm not saying that he is for sure! I'm just curious. Thor is definitely a unique boy, in my book at least. xD

White head/face is usually called piebald/monster. But his color change implies he is marble. I don't think there's a specific name for his color pattern: blue-black bicolor

He is definitely not an orchid which is not defined from color intensity, but from the pattern of black and irid. Orchids are usually dominantly black with specks of irid on body and streaks on fins.

I love Betta with the marble gene...they are a never-ending source of amazement!

I like the blue/black combination he now shows.

Thanks so much for the information! Bettas are just so fascinating and their different variations are forever entertaining me. I guess Thor is a wannabe Orchid, lol! Either way, he is beautiful to look at and his transformation has been really drastic. I've had him since January and this is how far he has come in that time. I love all my fish and this group has been a good one so far.
