yellow koi color change.

Hello, everyone. This is my first post here, so I hope I am doing it right.

I purchased a yellow koi from petco one week ago. My first betta since having a veiltail in college over 30 years ago! When I bought him he had only yellow and black markings. I noticed over the last couple of days that he is developing blue streaks in his tail and dorsal fins. Is he actually a "galaxy" koi? And can I expect the blue areas to spread?

Welcome to the Forum!

From everything I've researched, true Koi Betta cannot have any blue; just yellow, orange, red and/or black mostly on a flesh-colored body like Koi Goldfish. Unfortunately, people and stores that sell Betta have glommed onto color and patterns without reading the definition and mis-identify so many Betta. "Galaxy" is a trade name made up by people who thought scattered iridescent scales looked like a galaxy at night. So "Galaxy" Betta have scattered iridescent scales over the body.

I would say your gorgeous boy is going to marble. I love marbles because they are ever-changing. I even named one of mine "Random."

So should I expect him to turn completely blue, or some combination of yellow and blue?

Aquarium
Never completely blue most likely, they change their patterns, but usually don't become solid colored.
