Unhappy Rescuing a Betta

Hello everyone!

Meet Phantom, a quirky, ghost-looking Halfmoon with serious fin rot. I rescued him just yesterday and he is currently in his temporary container with some Melafix and Bactopur while his permanent container gets conditioned.

I first saw Phantom at the shop where I got my female Betta Saoirse, And it was a pretty tough choice between the two of them. I bought Saoirse that day. A month passed and I visited the shop several times, noticing that though the other Bettas I was undecisive on were gone, Phantom was still there! At first, I thought he was a Double Tail, but after looking at him more closely, I could see that his caudal fin was afflicted with severe fin rot, giving it the appearance of that of a Double Tail when he really is a Halfmoon.

Despite the condition of his fins, Phantom is a very lovely and lively fish who ate all his food today and is exploring his temporary container XD. Updates on his fins will be posted here.

I'm very glad to see he got a good home. In time and the right care he will be back to his beautiful self.
Now the question here is Did you pay for him or did the shop release him to you. Paying for a sick betta and bringing him back to health is a great thing to do. However buying a sick fish and paying top dollar is wrong. A rescue is you saying to the shop owner I can give him better care and make sure he is comfortable Or you can lose business by keeping this fish on display and people saying you don't take care of your stock, and the shop gives him to you to get him out of their care and the sight of customers.
Either way it is done, you have done the right thing and your new charge will have a greater chance of recovery with your care, and the love you show to the right care of the betta you now have.
I did a rescue a few years ago with my elephant ear Gunny. I was in the shop at the time they received a shipment of fish that was held in transit at a trucking company that could not deliver because of a major snow storm and freezing Temps. They were stuck in a trailer in this for 3 days before they made it to the store. 96% of the fish were Dead loss. They went through all to see if they could salvage any. Gunny A beautiful elephant ear was among them. Just barely alive and hanging on They decided it was best to leave him die. I told the owner if that was what they were going to do I would take him and try to bring him back. I did not pay for him, I wouldn't pay for a dead fish. I walked out of the store that day with him. Put him in a holding tan(hospital tank) and added medications. He didn't seem like he was going to make it. Hours later he started to respond but still had a long way to go. 6 years later I still have him and he is a very beautiful boy. I've taken pictures fo him back to the shop and let them know Gunny says Thank You.

I actually paid half the price of a healthy Betta for Phantom. :)

That was a wonderful thing you did--saving Gunny. :D I'm sure he's very happy under your care!

Being able to have the ability and knowledge of what we do as keepers is giving back to those who can't speak. But their reactions from the care, and feeding we give is their way of saying thank you for caring. I have received so much pleasure from the rescue of Gunny by seeing his reaction to my wife and I when we enter the room. His thanks is the shear beauty he fills in this world. I'm sure when Phantom recovers and with your care he will recover. you are going to find out just how much he appreciates the care and love you gave him. He will return it ten fold.

As of yesterday, I’ve moved Phantom to his permanent container with two smooth rocks for him as well as warm water with some salt, Bactopur, And Melafix. There was a slight debacle where I went out and left Phantom in a place where he could see his own shadow, thus leading him to flare at it for hours and making him very pale and very stressed. I instantly moved him to another place, on the windowsill with my other fishes, and put paper between each of the containers. There was another slight debacle where there was a slight gap between Solstice and Phantom’s containers and thus this gap made it possible for Solstice to see his shadow in the separating paper. I puffed up the paper so there’s no gap.

Phew! All said and done, both Solstice and Phantom are doing lovely, and Phantom is back to his normal color and normal behavior. Aren’t they silly, my boys are. XD

Nevertheless, there is a teeny sign of new growth in Phantom’s fins! *whoops for joy*

They do have their own personality, and that's what makes them so lovable. I'm glad to here there is new growth. Seems like your doing it right. keep us informed of the changes.

Phantom is doing wonderfully since my last update! He has an unfortunate habit of chomping on his food and spitting it out multiple times, but today he has eaten a bloodworm, a fly, and a pellet of his normal food. :)

His caudal fin is looking much better, and he has new plants!

I almost did the same thing, while in Petco the other day, I saw a very sad looking betta in a tank full of mollies. Almost his entire tail was missing, possibly chomped on by the mollies. I felt very sorry for him, but the little baby guy caught my eye, and I bought him instead.

If I go back in there and the sad guy is still there, I might just have to do another thing...

That poor Betta! If the sad Betta is still there, do rescue him. I'm sure he'll be super happy under your care.
