To answer your questions about killifish, I've never had them overpopulate a tank like guppies or some of the other livebearer species would. The adults tend to eat any fry they see, and once you reach a certain number of adults, the tank has to be very heavily planted for fry to survive.

I see Fundulopanchax gardneri at many fish stores here in Australia, but I'm not sure if they are something PetCo would stock.

Get a cheap 1 to 2.5 gal tank to put the plants in and you'll be able to use that as a hospital tank if you ever need to.

It sounds like they do the best they can for the betta at the petstore you go to. I wish all places were like that.

Yeah I did a dirted tank in the past and one of the reasons I hated it was the perilite constantly floating. Second reason was that the soil I used had a lot of wood in it and that wood caused constant air pockets so even though I had MTS I was constantly poking the soil. Poking the soil caused more perilite to float to the top. I stick to my sand now LOL.

Wait what???? WOOD causes air pockets???? THATS WHY I HAVE SO MANY AIR POCKETS?!?!?! when I was putting the dirt in I saw the wood pieces but was like "eh it probably serves a purpose" and left them. Man I swore my MTS weren't doing their job and today when I was planting I did see some MTS in the dirt but still saw air bubbling up and was so confused. The perilite wasn't the worst, I just sucked it out during water changes but it was annoying. I like my dirt sand combo way better than the gravel I had but I somehow made it way too thick.

Yes I was thinking about ordering some stuff now and that way I wouldn't be limited to only what petco sells. But that really puts me in a pickle if petco doesn't have any 20 longs since it will be at the end of the sale. The tank can only go on my dresser and the longest dimension it can fit is a 20 long. I saw you can now have them shipped but I feel like having a glass tank shipped is a bad idea. Perhaps I'll wait to get the tank first and then get everything else. So sorry for asking you so many questions but do you have any lighting recommendations? Right now I have lightbulbs. I know leds are a thing but I know nothing about them. I saw a lot of 20s have those long tubular bulbs. But it seems like a lot of people are doing the canopy thing and then somehow have the light above it?

Sorry for your loss I know its horrible I get the same with any fish I previously had 2 male bettas that died on me not at the same time. Didn't keep them together. I got a blue one he lasted weeks. He died. Then I got another one he died 2 days later. I was so upset and said to my husband can't go through this anymore. And decided not to get any at that point. My tank was empty. And for a few days I felt so hurt so upset. And I felt lonely that I didn't have a betta no more. Then I decided to go out and. Get another one. He's lovely so amazing. Its up to you what you do. Maybe just give yourself a little break from having one and then see how you feel. You may find that you get yourself another one

Thank you! I did the exact same thing. I just let my tank sit empty while I was deciding what to do and then last Saturday when I woke up it just felt "right" so I went to that expensive boutique I talked about in my earlier comments. It had significantly gone down in quality, only maybe like 15 bettas and at least 7-10 of them looked sick or bit half their tail off (one was half bitten up to the body) There were 4 that were active and looked ok. There were also 4-5 regular veiltails that didn't look sick and looked full grown but were just sitting stationary in their cups. So maybe about 20 bettas total. I did get one of the ones that was active and I've felt really guilty about it ever since. I tested the water for ammonia when I got home and it was as high as the test could go. Haven't decided on a name yet but was thinking Oliver.

Yes it was terrible! They were such a great store before and took such wonderful care of their bettas in the past. Idk what happened. I'd never heard of the store until it came to my town, not sure if it's a franchise thing or a corporate owned thing. If they keep taking care of their bettas like that I can't buy from them again. Petco/Petsmart has a worse cup situation but at least the majority of theirs are healthy.

Thank you! I still don't know if that's actually what I'm going to name him or not, having trouble coming up with ideas.
