Choosing Betta Names

I'm curious to find out how people have decided the names for their bettas! Baldur's name was an easy choice as I am a Mythology buff (Egyptian , Norse , Greek) and Baldur is my favorite Norse God. I believe I'm going to stick with the Norse theme for my next two.

So, let's hear how you chose yours?

Jasper Coyote, something about his coloring made me think of Jasper stones. Coyote because he seemed like such a playful trickster. Sadly that trick played out after a high dive to his death.
GG, was Ginny closest to Jenny, who was in a tank with Forrest & Bubba (it's a movie), also Ginny like a Genie..
Orion, because I wanted to give him a strong name (to help support his healing back in the day - you know, 4 weeks ago), and he reminds me of the blue and white stars in the constellation Orion. Orion is also a hunter.
Nut (aka Zsa Zsa), Zsa Zsa just seemed so fitting for this light blue female and her show off style. But I went with Nut, after the Egyptian Goddess, because she's a nut... and ruler of the earth and sky seems fitting too.
Osiris, (I'm on an egyptian kick?) the egyptian god of the dead, and rebirth. He came to me so small, and so sick, with all his fins clamped and barely swimming. He needed a strong name too.

Those are my recent Betta names.

I've got Rama (the Ram) for the aspect of Vishnu.
Heket (the frog), another egyptian goddess (of frogs!).
Mickey (who was Forrest, the Angelfish), because every time I look at him I wanted to call him Mickey.. *shrug*

Really enjoying the Egyptian Mythology theme you've got going. I considered Set/Seth (brother to Osiris and the God of Chaos!) but Baldur really fit the personality of my fish. I'm keeping the names Magni and Modi (sons of Thor) and Njord (Norse God for the ocean, coasts and such) in mind as potential betta names. Persephone would be a great name for a female betta.. but then I'd just have to name another Hades, haha. It would be an interesting idea to name a bunch of bettas after all the Aesir Gods and Goddesses.

Rhodey is named Rhodey, because James Rhodes from Marvel is my favorite character, and when I first brought him home he was red, white, and blue like the Iron Patriot armor. I have no idea where Indy came from, I think I just started calling him that for some reason?? Every time someone asked, I'd change the reason for 'Indy', sometimes for Indiana Jones, the Indoraptor, for the Indy 500. He was feisty like Dr Jones, great at camouflage like the raptor, and was always zooming around his tank like a tiny race car.

That is a good play on words kaelan. I like that name, Rhodey, and never realized it was from Marvel.. good choice! Marvel has unique names for the characters. I would've guessed the Indy 500 for that one.

How I chose my betta's name

I attended a luau during my first trip to Hawaii. The emcee said that everything in Hawaii is "mo' bettah." He made a big deal of saying mo' bettah rather than more better, I guess because the native Hawaiians don't really say their 'Rs' (I'm assuming). Anyway, the emcee was so engaging and his expression left an impression on both my husband and I so, over the many years since, we often use the expression mo' bettah. So my fish became Mo Betta.

My male is Artemis because I had just finished the Artemis Fowl book series when I got him. My EE female is Flitter because my dad mentioned how she kind of flitters as she swims, sort of like a butterfly I also call Flitter Mrs Fowl.

For my Mishi, I had a name all picked out and when he came home, he just became Mishi.
For Saffron, I was cooking and had some tumeric in my hands (which we call Saffron powder on the islands), looked over at the little guy glass surfing and he was thenceforth known as Saffron. It really had nothing to do with the color of his fins.
