I was raised before music was reduced to 3 major chords (1-4-5).

I was taught "Tes,sir. No sir. Please and Thank you. I miss that. When did "you're welcome" become "no problem?"

And I'm tired of punk kids calling me by my first name in a professional setting. Got tired of that long before I got old. I used to totally ignore police officers until they sussed to calling me Mister. Can't do that anymore; the cops are too well-armed and hair-trigger. And they have bad manners.

During the 80's I was a big fan of punk, new wave, alternative and my ears did ring for a few days after a Sex Pistols concert but no permanent damage. Phew!
You lucked out. I went to all those concerts plus. No one told us back then how important it was to protect your ears. And living a 10 minute walk from Summerfest dIdnxt help. Since 1996 I have had severe tinnitus. It took me a year of wanting to slam my head into a wall to get used to it, no matter what you do you can't get away from it. Amazingly I have had my ears tested and even with the tinnitus, I still have fairly intact hearing.
99% of the time now I don't notice the tinnitus, even though it is loud
d and 24 hours a day.
I still go to concerts, except now I take earplugs. Had a pair of musician's plugs made many years ago already.
Now I see all these kids running around pumping noise into their ears. So loudly that I can make out every lyric. And I just think....give it time kiddo, you will pay for it eventually.

Hal you wouldn't last a day with my commute into Boston. I witness rude to the nth power every single day that I'm there. I actually got into a shoving match recently with a woman who pushed me into a blind woman and service dog while trying to shove everyone out of the way on an escalator to get to her train.

When I lived closer, I optioned to take the same bus route as my very pregnant co-worker so I could shame men into giving up their seat when she got on. She was too nice to ask them if she could "please sit". Funny how intently they had to read their newspapers at the time and didn't notice a very large belly sticking out at them. Grrrrrrr!!!

And to those panhandlers who are rattling their change cups at me while holding an iphone 6 or ipad air in the other hand, NOPE NOPE NOPE! I know how many places there are in the city to get a free meal and a bed because I volunteer at most of them.

When I have time and cash, I will often offer to buy some of them a sandwich or breakfast. Guess how many actually want the food rather than cash? Pretty much none of them.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

NYC in 1968 was unusually well-mannered. People were helpful on the subway. Went out of their way to get out of the way, when necessary. Everyone -- old grandmas, superflies, office workers, junkies, black, brown, white -- everyone held the back door of the bus so it wouldn't close in the face of the person exiting behind them.

Healthy men -- and women -- routinely gave up their subway or bus seat for the old or laden.

Here's something my sister sent me. I'll put it in the post below so you can clip it more easily.

A blues jam is good for a warmup, gets the fingers wiggling. Going to concerts was bad for the hearing, playing guitar & bass in front of an amp the size of a fridge was bad for the hearing. 36 years of running loud noisy printing equipment has probably been the worst thing for my hearing.

As it is I dislocated the tiny bones in my right ear decades ago, some surg which is probably considered primitive by today's standards got about 50% back. The inner ear is still good, once I retire from the trade I'll get that fixed up.

That rudeness thing. Nearly every shop I've worked at has been in a "disadvantaged" area, real estate is cheap, nobody is going to steal a printing press that weighs 12k pounds, unless they bring a 20k pound forklift. It's amazing how well behaved the folks that are not criminals behave in these areas. No shoving, hold doors, the whole please thank you routine. This is most likely due to that criminal element, who may perceive the smallest slight as a reason to go off. Near everyone is armed, polite society & all I guess.

Head out to the ritzy suburbs, what a bunch of self centered snots. That commute into Boston sounds like every shopping area there is out there. I've gotten dragged there shopping a very few times by my wife, just amazing. So well off, so lucky to have the schooling & careers they've had, so socially inept.

Wait till you see crowded NYC. It took me a while to get used to the "wait you just shoved past me and you're not going to apologize?"

I still say sorry if I have to push past people. But I feel a little awkward doing it sometimes as I'm the only one. bleh.

I read this when I was a kid. Pete Seeger set it to music, so he's often credited. But it goes back before that ... I know.

Old age is golden, or so I’ve heard said,
But sometimes I wonder, as I crawl into bed,
With my ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table until I wake up.
As sleep dims my vision, I say to myself:
Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf?
But, though nations are warring, and Congress is vexed,
We’ll still stick around to see what happens next!
  • How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get-up-and-go has got up and went!
But, in spite of it all, I’m able to grin
And think of the places my getup has been!
When I was young, my slippers were red;
I could kick up my heels right over my head.
When I was older my slippers were blue,
But still I could dance the whole night through.
Now I am older, my slippers are black.
I huff to the store and puff my way back.
But never you laugh; I don’t mind at all:
I’d rather be huffing than not puff at all!

  • How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get-up-and-go has got up and went!
But, in spite of it all, I’m able to grin
And think of the places my getup has been!
I get up each morning and dust off my wits,
Open the paper, and read the Obits.
If I’m not there, I know I’m not dead,
So I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed!

  • How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get-up-and-go has got up and went!
But, in spite of it all, I’m able to grin
And think of the places my getup has been!

You know you are old when you stop searching for the meaning of life to focus on searching for your car keys.
