Betta Fish Facebook group hostility!

Hey guys so I am the proud owner of a Betta named flynn and I joined a Facebook group for Betta Fish owners around the same time I joined this group and can I just say wow! This site has a much more positive environment. The Facebook group I joined was full of toxic nasty people that ridiculed me and said it was inhuman of me to keep a Betta in a 3.5 gallon heated/filtered tank and that bettas need at least 10 gallons to be truly happy! All these people who though they where some kind of expert just because they owned a betta lol I have since then realized that if you want honest and helpful Betta Fish advice do not join a Facebook group for it! Anyways I also wanted to say thank you for your help in my other post about tank mates for Bettas and I hope you all have a nice day!

A lot of betta keepers tend to go overboard. I think that a 3.5 gallons (instead of 5) should be the minimum, 10 gallons being the best. Besides, it sounds like you take great care of your fish!

Welcome to our Forum!

Believe it or not, I just removed myself from a FB group both as a member and a mod. If you want a nice FB group you can join mine (linked in my sig) where shaming is grounds for instant removal and I enforce it. Wanna be rude? Gone! Wanna shame? Gone!

However, even though I have my small group I spend a majority of my time here as it is a friendly, non-judgmental environment with a vast amount of knowledge and diversity of opinions and ideas from all over the world. We can disagree with each other but we must disagree politely.

BTW, as noted, my group is a linking member with PetGuide so linking is acceptable. Linking to social groups not so linked is a violation of BF rules.

PS: IME, it is not the size of the tank that matters as much the quality of care. While, aesthetically, I prefer a minimum of 2.5 gallons, I have seen some awfully healthy, active Betta in smaller bowls/tanks. And for the first 10 years of my Betta-keeping history, the biggest affordable habitat were two-gallon bowls and my Betta all lived 6-7 years. No bloat, no fin biting, no disease. That is why I know habitat maintenance is the most important role of an aquarist. Off soapbox!!!

Lol. Forums or FB groups, are the same - depending on the policy they hold. Parhaps because people are too passionate about their bettas, they tend to over do things. There was once a member who only joined for a few days because she insisted that betas need gigantic tanks to be happy (forgot 50 or 70g)

If you keep up with water changes, tank size doesn't really matter - bare minimum; as long as it's big enough for betta to move without touching tank wall.

Breeders and pet hobbiyist care for them differently. The former cannot keep hundreds to thousands 2.5g tanks. . . . Thai breeders keep thousands in small jars, but they are healthy.

BTW, welcome to the forum

I have to say that RusselltheShihTzu's betta group on Facebook is great. Just curious, was the group you left the one with the initials BFE? They can be pretty mean to people asking (or not asking) for advice...

Yep, but it happens. We have had many who think anything less than a 20 long is too small. Luckily, we seem to have weeded out the Betta Police on this Forum. Maybe because they got so little validation.
