Question Question about Mustard Gas Betta

I purchased a Mustard Gas Betta from Petsmart.
He is now about five months old and has no more color than when I bought him as a baby of a few weeks old.
He is still showing a cellophane color with very light blue around the edges of his ventral fin.

My question is how long may it be before he shows more color? Is there anything I can feed him to bring out more color?
Will he stay this way?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have any pictures?

My betta started out with blue and red color and as his fins grew as he got older, they came in clear. They darkened up after a couple months. Is the clear only on new fin growth? Or was he always clear to begin with? At 4 months, from what I've seen, most bettas would get the majority of their color, if they don't have the marble gene.

How do you know it was a mustard gas betta? I don't think petsmart could accurately say what kind of coloring it would have if you bought the baby that young. They usually just label it as "baby boy" or "baby halfmooon" or something.

They can be a drastic change from kid to adult (see my pictures, I also bought a baby boy from petco and you can see that the new growth was clear before it darkened up to blue. He also lost all of his red in his fins.) but they should have color when you buy them as a baby, especially if its a mustard gas, which should have pretty dark blue/green or black coloring for the body. If the body is still light, my guess is that your betta isn't a mustard gas.

Hi blubird!
Thanks for your input!
I suspect he is a MG because his body is a very faint blue and his very faint blue line is almost at the perimeter of his ventral fin
He does look very much like a MG except just not very dark.
I wish I had pics, I have to get a camera!

He is a gregarious little fellow and a keeper, no matter what!

Nowadays people refer bettas with yellow fins and dark colored body as MG. Your little guy doesn't sound like MG - cellophane coloring. He sounds like a variety from the cambodian line. If so, he is unlikely to color up unless he is a marble.

Mustard gas are usually defined by a blue/black body with yellow fins. They are usually pretty striking.

It could be that your betta's parents were one mustard gas with a cellophane, *shrug* guess we'll just see when he grows up! Could also be a butterfly.
