Hello fro, Cali! New Breeder

Hello all! I'm from Palmdale California. I've owned fish tanks for about ten years now with some breaks in between. I currently have a ten gallon with a pea puffer, 5 guppies( male) and a beautiful male Betta whom I call Beast. I just recently started with a few live plants and I cant believe I've been using fake ones for all these years! I would like to start breeding Bettas, I have a few more ten gallon tanks so I'm working on getting more gravel, live plants, heaters, and learning how to make my own sponge filters. I would love any and all advice from active breeders regarding breeding, finding buyers, and where I can get young breeding couples. Thanks and I look forward to chatting with you guys and learning as much new stuff as possible!

Hello:] I wouldn't say I'm super experienced, I feel like I just get lucky a lot haha! I have been reading forums on this site for about an hour now and I'm super torn as to what type of Bettas I'd like to breed! I'm going to start with one pair, I absolutely love the colors of the koi betta and the body/fins of the halfsun, halfmoon....well pretty much anything with long fins! I especially love the Feather type....I wonder how hard it will be to find a breeding pair young enough?

Welcome to the forum! You're in a fairly active area as far as breeding goes, so you might be able to find something locally or order from around the states or oversees without too much issue.

Best to note that breeding rose and feathertails is frowned upon, as it can often leads to nasty deformities (called x-factor) and tail biting because of the sheer weight of the fins.

They're all the same species, just different variety. Any halfmoons can have issues with fin biting, but generally rose and feathertails are the only ones susceptible to x-factoring. Some other varieties can have their own issues, like short bodied doubletailes, but as long as you research the type of fish you want to breed you should become aware of anything that could be a problem.
