MarbleBob in Illinois

Hi, new to the forum. My name is Bobbie, and I'm the proud owner of two (I think) beautiful bettas. About 30 +/- years ago I kept around 25 to 30 bettas, both male and female. I started collecting, then decided to try breeding. For many reasons the spawning wasn't successful, so I ended up finding my friends new homes where I knew they would be appreciated.

Now I've started again with my 2 males, Fergal and Aedan. There are so many new colors, patterns, new fin/tail "styles", and just general information on keeping, disease control, etc., than there was when I had my hoard .

I do have a disease problem with one, which I'll put in the disease forum, but I'm looking to learning a lot of info I missed in my time without bettas, and talking with people who know more than I do! Thanks for having me in your community!

Welcome, this place is amazing and almost everyone on here is more then happy to help. I would love to see what your boys look like, please post some pictures of them. I currently have two boys as well named Jaws and Hamlet. Do your boys know any tricks? Also try drawing on your tanks with dry erase markers.

Depression is just like a broken bone, they both need medical attention and it's nothing to be ashamed of. Try to write at least ten healthy and positive things that are going on in your life. You will be amazed by how effective this is.

Hi, tiffanylucky! Boy, your answer sure was quick! It does seem like an amazing place. I've had some bad luck at other unnamed forums, but this one has a totally different feel, so I'm happy to find them. I'm giggling when you ask about "tricks". The only tricks my boys know how to do is magically transport to the place in the tank that I feed them! Other than that, nope. Do yours know tricks, and if they do, what are the tricks and how did you teach them. I never thought about the dry erase markers. I'll try that. Btw, I absolutely love your sig.

Thank you, I just want to share this with others because it gives you a different way at looking at depression or any other mental illness. Also yes I do have depression, I take meds and it's under control. Well Jaws is the only one who knows how to do any tricks, he hops for food. I lost my sassy female tiffy who knew many tricks, jumping for food, swimming through a hoop and a tunnel, jumping through a hoop and a few more. Her organs were shutting down because she was three years old. I wanted to find a sad looking betta to spoil asap and ended up taking hamlet home. Hamlet doesn't know any tricks yet, I'm still working on gaining his trust.

Try holding betta food around an inch over the water line and make sure they notice the food. They may not hop the first time, but they soon will learn they need to "catch" the betta food.

Depression is just like a broken bone, they both need medical attention and it's nothing to be ashamed of. Try to write at least ten healthy and positive things that are going on in your life. You will be amazed by how effective this is.

I didn't say anything about the hopping, because I thought it was just because they were hungry, not really a trick! Fergal is much more laid back than Aedan, and is also the smaller of the two, so at mealtimes he doesn't get all wiggly or excited. But at mealtime, Aedan does jump! Seems like I haven't fed him in days, he'll come out of the water as far as his gills. I make sure not to overfeed them, but it seems like they almost police themselves. When Aedan stops jumping, dinner's over. He especially jumps for the frozen bloodworms. I'll start doing that on purpose with Fergal and see if he starts hopping, too.

I don't want to cause trouble and I know this isn't the place to discuss this, but I like your sig because we're both in the same boat (as long as we're talking about fish.....). Totally understand where you're coming from.

Your not starting trouble, I've already accepted myself. It always makes my day when others can relate to that.
