You do partial water changes to dilute the ammonia until the cycle takes over. C:

Did you wash the gel off the Anubias? It's non toxic, but dirties the water pretty fast.

Nice looking tank, glad you did your research first. We don't see a lot of that here. >.<

I haven't tested my fresh tap water for ammonia yet, but I suspect it might be naturally high. My sister (who works at a local pet shop) says lots of people are having high ammonia at the moment. In this case, would partial water changes hurt more than help until the bacteria is established?

I'll do a test when I get home tonight.

I did rinse the Anubias off under cool, running tap water before adding it, and there was no visible gel remaining.

Thank you! I'm happy the tank looks acceptable ^_^ I'm committed to giving any animal I bring home the best life I can manage.

how long should I wait to add a betta? Do I need to wait for the cycle to stabilize completely or can I add one tomorrow as long as the temperature is good?

If you're having spikes and possible ammonia in the tap the only way I'd add at this point is if you can dose Seachem Prime daily. Otherwise let the cycle stabilize.

I just got home and tested the water straight out of my tap for ammonia. It was identical to the test from my tank, so there is indeed ammonia in the tap water (very strange, considering my town generally has a reputation for very clean water.)

This being the case, I won't do any water changes until its time to clean, and will add Prime to the water daily. Is prime safe to add to a tank with a fish in it?
20 drops is what is needed for a 10 gallon tank, correct?

Thank you so much, everyone who posted :) I'm so glad I've found a place where I can get reliable information.

I was trying really hard to wait to buy a betta until at least tomorrow (to give the bacteria a little more time to grow) but, while I was at the store tonight I fell in love with a little male betta.

He was labeled as "Double Tail Male" but I don't know enough about varieties to say what else he's got going on.

All the bettas at this store seemed to be in pretty good shape (at least to my newbie eyes) but this boy in particular was swimming in circles and blowing bubbles all over the place (I think he even had a bit of a nest started!)

He's still in his cup at the moment, as I'm working on cutting a water-bottle baffle for the tank's filter, but he gobbled up two pellets that I gave him :3

I'll be floating his container in the tank for awhile before adding him to the tank.

I'll post pictures as soon as my phone has enough charge to do so x_x

Here he is! The cup is floating in the tank right now. He seems excited by the new surroundings haha.

... I don't know why the image is sideways >_<

Does his tail look like a heart? :3 Then he's a Doubletail (DT) with possibly some Halfmoon (HM) or Rosepetal genes somewhere in there. I'm not sure on the coloring, but he looks to be some variation of Cambodian with maybe a little Dragonscale.

Lol. If you need a better description, please do tell me. I probably sound like I'm speaking gibberish.
