Talking My boyfriend laughs at my betta obsession

Apparently my boyfriend doesn't share the same interest in fish/bettas as I do, and I'm pretty sure my friends are tired of hearing about them as well I'm relatively new to betta keeping, I've had them in the past without the proper knowledge to go with it. I did my research this time around, though!

I recently purchased 2 halfmoon males, I've had them about 4 days now. I have a 20 gallon long divided in 4 parts. Currently the middle two are empty, just housing some plants that I'm trying to grow out some more.

My lighter colored one is Stitch and he's probably got the best personality[to me of course]. He loves chasing air bubbles, which is problematic during feeding. I have to feed him 1 pellet at a time because he gets distracted very easily. He also loves to circle the thermometer in his tank. My red and blue is Seth and he's extremely grumpy all the time unless you're feeding him. He's constantly looking for a way to get out of his part of the tank. He also greatly enjoys squeezing himself under the sponge filter[there's plenty of room for him to chill] and likes to scare me in thinking he might be dead. Both are highly active and far too amusing to watch.

Hello,
Welcome to the forum.

Where I'm at bettas are considered "childish". Friends and family look down on my obsession. I never talk about it unless asked.

I txt photos/pics to anyone worthy when i get a new betta in the tank.
They all think Mac is cute/neat/cool.

That sucks indjo
If these people kept one for a week they would be hard pressed not to get attached.
But if that's their attitude, they don't deserve a Betta's company anyway.
no offense

My friend's will listen to me if I talk about Monet, and the Ramshorn snail herd, and will occasionally ask questions, but I always get the impression that it's more in the line of an adult indulging a child instead of a true interest in either Monet or the snails. I do think they'd likely question my sanity if I told them exactly how much I've managed to spend on Monet and his tank, and to some extent on the snails tank, after all it's just a fish and really you care about snails.... so I don't tell them and don't tell them when I get some new upgraded piece of equipment for the tank like the Finnex light that should be coming today. Speaking of which, let me go check to see if it's here yet LOL.

Thanks McLareN, your boy has such a nice bright color!!

Thank you Nova, I actually got them both from PetSmart. I intended to go in only to get my plants to grow them out a bit until I ordered from a breeder... and saw those two and literally couldn't say no. They were so frisky and looked so healthy.

My friends "entertain" me. I think they enjoy the snapchat videos of Stitch and Seth being weird, but that's about it. They just are like... it's a fish? oh well, they're missing out. They're my little buddies. They keep me entertained and it's really relaxing to just watch them both swimming about. I'm planning on adding two more in a few months. I asked my mom if I could take over a portion of the basement for a fish room, she didn't find it as amusing as I did lol

Aquarium
I took over a portion of the garage and my parents were not amused, either. What is it with adults? Lol!

My boyfriend loves how excited I get about my fish, the sales I make, and setting up new tanks ^^ my life revolves around my 2yr old daughter and my fish, then come my other pets and my family. It's so confusing to other people how much time and energy I put into "a living decoration" 🙄

I get comments like "it can't be that important" " the fish can go hungry for a few days" and " you're using baby fish as an excuse not to _____" . I finally got mad and explained why I can't leave my fry alone for days to go to functions I don't want to be at any way.
You realize letting my baby fish die by not feeding them for a few days is like a furniture store setting it's new shipment on fire right? That's idiotic, and bad business practice. I'm TRYING to make something out of myself here!

My girlfriend loves the fact that I'm excited about fish. Not because she likes them too, but because that means when I go to the pet store she can go and look at the guinea pigs and what not.

Honestly I think my family isn't interested per say (though I do get the accessional question two) but more amused at my so called "never ending knowledge" on the topic. My older brother owns a betta and though he still sees it as "just a fish", he'll still check in with me when he does more complex things with it (ie adding tank mates and filtration and all that fun stuff)

I think another reason my family somewhat supports the idea is because of all of my psychology issues (ADD, OCD, anxiety, and anger issues) and I've noticed a change too. The more time I spend with my fish and talking about them, the less likely my ADD shows up or my anger issues come out.
